Politicians urged to focus on economy

THE SCOTTISH Chambers of Commerce is today urging politicians to make the expansion of the economy their number one priority at both local and national level.

The organisation, whose members provide more than half of Scotland’s private sector jobs, said a more prosperous nation would benefit not only businesses but everyone else too.

In its new document, Delivering for Scotland–The Business Perspective, the SCC has produced a number of recommendations which it hopes politicians will act upon.

SCC executive director Liz Cameron said, “Increased wealth creation results in higher levels of economic activity and in more revenue for government, giving it the opportunity to invest additional resources in public services, infrastructure and social objectives.

“In order to achieve economic growth, SCC believes action is necessary in five key areas—national economic development, education and skills, transport, energy and regional economic development.

“These areas are interdependent and concerted government action will be necessary to deliver real and lasting results.

“Scotland’s politicians are likely to face tough resource challenges over the next four years following the Westminster Government’s forthcoming comprehensive spending review.

“We believe that by focusing on economic growth, the new Scottish Executive will be able to deliver the most for Scotland.”

Amongst the SCC’s key recommendations are:

* The creation of a single Scottish skills agency.

* Implementation of a long-term economic strategic plan to encourage business creation and growth and reduce red tape.

* Introduction of research and development incentives for small to medium enterprises.

* New direct air links to international markets.

* A feasibility study on a cross-border high-speed rail link.

* Better access to modern apprenticeships.

* Development of a 20-year structural transport plan.

* An exploration of the option of new nuclear power stations.

* A new Forth crossing.

Ms Cameron added, “We believe that the overarching priority for the next Scottish Executive should be growing Scotland’s economy, and that this goal should be reflected in policy decisions across all areas of governmental responsibility.

“A more prosperous Scotland is good not just for business but also for all the people of Scotland and all aspects of Scottish society.”
