Setting stage for ANZAC Day ceremony

Preparations are under way for the commemoration of ANZAC Day at Arbroath’s Western Cemetery on April 22.

Provisionally, those who will be attending include: The Lord Lieutenant of Angus; The First Secretary from the New Zealand High Commission; The Australian and New Zealand Honorary Consuls in Scotland; politicians; civic leaders; representatives of the Earl Haig Fund; UK military personnel; many Australians and New Zealanders who live in Scotland; and British friends and families.

ANZAC Day commemorations were started following the first world war as a special day on which Australians and New Zealanders venerate the bravery of members of their armed forces who died during the war.

It has developed and changed since 1918.

At the ceremony in Arbroath they will remember and pay tribute to the sacrifice of four young Kiwi airmen who died whilst serving in the Fleet Air Arm during the second world war. The graves of Brian Patterson, William Drake, Richard Chettle and Frederick Batten are in the Arbroath Western Cemetery.

The ceremony will include music by the Arbroath Instrumental Band, the ANZAC address, commemorations for the four New Zealanders buried in the cemetery, Australian and New Zealand poems and a gun salute by 212 Battery RA.
