Families flock to fun day in park

Dundee woke to a blaze of sunshine yesterday as thousands of families flocked to Camperdown Park to celebrate Easter.

Blustery winds didn’t dampen the bright start to the day, which saw the city council event attracting hundreds of families for a feast of music and entertainment.

As the sun shone with temperatures peaking at an enjoyable 15C, crowds swelled to beat last year’s total of 16,000, with youngsters taking full advantage of the activities, games and rides.

The wildlife centre kick-started proceedings with staff helping children to make Easter cards and decorate eggs as well as showing visitors the smallest and largest eggs in the world.

The sprawling grass of Camperdown also provided the perfect spot for egg-rolling with young and old taking part.

The afternoon brought some cloudy and breezy spells, but the sun was never far away and a sprawling mass of stalls and rides was built around a Radio Tay roadshow.

The day was kicked off from the main stage by Scotland’s X-Factor finalists The MacDonald Brothers, who belted out their karaoke takes of classics such as Bay City Rollers’ Shang-a-lang and The Proclaimers’ chart-topping 500 Miles, before The Law continued a hectic weekend by performing their new single Milk ‘n’ Honey.

Themed rides such as Artizani’s Revolution and Stickleback Plasticus proved popular, with queues of children packing the rides all day.

There were also several more sedate activities available, including an art corner where children could make Easter-themed flowers.

Leisure and arts convener Charles Farquhar attended with his grandchildren and was delighted with the strong turnout.

He said, “What a great day. The wonderful weather of late has continued and we’ve had a great day.

“I hope people enjoyed themselves as much as they looked like they were enjoying themselves.

“My grandchildren certainly enjoyed it.”

Police confirmed there was queuing traffic in the area, but said there were no major traffic problems surrounding the event.

A spokesman said, “Traffic was flowing normally, with just minor inconveniences from people arriving and leaving on the Kingsway sliproads east and west.”

While the crowds flocked to Camperdown, the Easter bunny visiting the city centre’s Overgate Shopping Centre yesterday lunchtime helped put a spring in shoppers’ steps.

The white fluffy bunny wandered around the centre offering families free chocolate Easter eggs to add to their haul.
