Go-ahead for housing at former linen factory

Victoria Works.

THOMAS MITCHELL Homes have been given the go-ahead to build over 180 flats at Victoria Works in Dunfermline’s Pilmuir Street.

The firm’s planning application prompted 13 letters of objection. Neighbours wrote to the council with concerns the flats would be too high, would mean loss of privacy, would increase traffic and would have a detrimental impact on the town centre.

However, councillors approved the proposal, which will create 24 homes in the existing building and a further 160 flats, at the last meeting of west area development committee.

Part of the proposal involves demolishing a “significant proportion” of the former linen factory, including weaving sheds.

The new blocks being constructed will include one three-storey building and six four-storey buildings, with associated roads, car parking and landscaping.

Creating housing on the site is contrary to the local plan, but planners recommended approval, stating the development would prevent the B-listed building falling into disrepair.
