A STAR-STUDDED television programme dedicated to the former teen magazine Jackie, published by D. C. Thomson & Co Ltd, hit TV screens last night.
Jackie Magazine: A Girl’s Best Friend examined the golden age of Jackie and included interviews with former readers, writers and publishers who shared their memories of growing up in the 60s and 70s.
The magazine, started in 1963, was an essential part of growing up for generations of teenage girls and was packed with invaluable advice about pop music, fashion and boys. It eventually folded in 1993.
Stars interviewed on the show include newsreader Fiona Bruce—a former Jackie photo model—Michelle Collins, Anthea Turner and Trisha Goddard. 70s heart-throb David Cassidy talked about being a Jackie pin-up.
Sandra Monks, who works as fiction editor at D. C. Thomson’s offices in Meadowside, edited the popular teen magazine in the late 70s and was interviewed in the programme.
“Girls’ magazines have changed beyond all recognition since the time of Jackie,” she said. “Things are so different for young girls nowadays with mobile phones, the internet and the media. I remember a girl once wrote to our problem page asking for advice on how to persuade her father to get a telephone!”
