Council set to tackle rabbits problem

DUNDEE CITY Council is to tackle a rabbit infestation following claims by angry residents that the east end of the city is now polluted with the creatures.

John Hall (60), who has lived with his wife in Old Craigie Road for over 30 years, told The Courier the animals are demolishing neighbours’ gardens and wrecking the grounds of Eastern Cemetery.

“I’ve been here for years, and this is the first time we’ve had a problem with rabbits,” he said.

“My wife and I are retired and we take great pleasure in our garden, but the wee blighters have been digging up our plants and shrubs. Our neighbours are experiencing the same problems.”

Mr Hall says that the nearby football pitch has become a “giant rabbit warren” and the area is now overrun with the creatures.

“Eastern Cemetery is also rotten with them, and they are digging holes all over the place,” he went on. “They’ve been burrowing beside one sarcophagus and you can virtually see right the way down. They’re ruining the ground and, potentially, very dangerous for people walking about there.”

He added, “I contacted pest control, and they told me that they would come out and sort the problem— as long as I paid for it—but, in my opinion, it’s the council’s problem.”

A council spokeswoman confirmed that the football pitches off Old Craigie Road belong to the council and said, “We will be sending a gamekeeper in to deal with the rabbit situation.”
