Destroyer arrives for refit at dockyard

THE DESTROYER HMS Gloucester arrived in the Firth of Forth yesterday to begin a multi-million pound refit at Rosyth Dockyard.

The Type 42 destroyer, which provides air cover for the fleet, will remain at Rosyth for seven months.

Her arrival provides job security for up to 200 workers, while they wait for work on the Royal Navy’s two new aircraft carriers.

The Fife yard is expected to carry out the final construction of the so-called supercarriers, which are much larger than the navy’s current carriers.

During her stay the Gloucester will undergo a major overhaul of her main and auxiliary machinery systems, including underwater valves and sea tubes, aviation equipment and accommodation.

She will also get new IT equipment, be painted inside and out and have a device fitted to improve her fuel efficiency.

Archie Bethel, managing director of Babcock Engineering Services, said, “As industry prepares for the build of the future aircraft carriers, it is essential that we retain the key skills that will be required in support of this exciting project.”
