School’s bike event

FOLLOWING THE recent launch of its school travel plan, Leuchars Primary now has a 40-capacity secure cycle shelter and a set of high-visibility waistcoats to improve safety for pupils.

The school’s P7 travel action group chose the shelter design, and the enterprising pupils have also produced cycle permits to ensure that pupils who cycle to school are wearing helmets and use safe routes.

In anticipation of the new shelter, the school hosted a Try a Bike event last week, run by the Company of Cyclists. Primary 3-7 pupils were able to ride all kinds of bikes around a track in the playground.

Teacher Jenny Stevens said the hard work in developing a travel plan has already resulted in the new equipment to help pupils cycle safely to school.

She said the £12,000 for the equipment was awarded by the Scottish Executive through Sustrans’ Safe Routes to Schools team in Scotland.
