Talking tactics for team’s future

FORFAR’S FEMALE footballers are closing in on success on and off the park.

The girls of Forfar Farmington are nearing the end of a tough season in the premier league of Scotland’s women’s game, and having already notched up a history-making Scottish Cup run, by reaching the quarter finals of this year’s competition, their remaining target is to consolidate a top flight slot.

The club’s other goal is to create a new Farmington centre at the Market Muir pitch which is their training base in the town, with plans for the £250,000 project poised to go before councillors next month.

Their aim is to put changing rooms and floodlights in place at the council-owned park, with half the money for the scheme in place and hopes pinned on grant cash filling the gap.

Team manager and Forfar Farmington chairman Colin Brown is hopeful the season will end on a high, and the well-known local is also eager to taste success in another campaign as he enters the final stages of electioneering as an independent candidate in Forfar for next week’s Angus Council elections.

Mr Brown has also recently returned from Sweden, where he saw first- hand the excellent sports facilities which exist in towns the size of Forfar, and he believes Angus could learn a lot from the Scandinavian nation.

“I went there through the SFA to look at their club development system and was very impressed by what I saw,” he said.

“Small towns all have their own excellent facilities, not just for football, and there is a huge level of investment by government and local authorities into all youth sport.

“I saw a lot of things which we can definitely learn from over here.”

He added, “The SFA have also started a quality mark scheme and we are one of the clubs working towards that and hoping to achieve it by the end of the season.

“We are also one of just a few clubs hoping to achieve elite club status, which is more about the running of the club and issues such as child protection rather than results on the park,” Mr Brown added.
