Tesco facing drivers’ strike

A THREE-DAY strike by Tesco distribution drivers at Livingston on the eve of the May Bank Holiday will hit food and other supplies to nearly 100 of the firm’s stores across Scotland, their union said yesterday.

Drivers will walk out from Thursday to Saturday of next week in the dispute over the resiting of the depot just 500 yards down the road and the ‘derecognition’ of the Transport and General Workers’ Union section of Unite the Union.

The strike action by nearly 150 drivers, all members of the T&G section of Unite, was confirmed after a packed meeting.

Tony Trench, T&G section of Unite regional industrial organiser, said Tesco’s decision to derecognise the union plus telling drivers to sign up to the new deal by this Friday or lose their jobs were unacceptable pressures.

A Tesco spokesman has said that shoppers would not be affected by the industrial action.

He said that the company had exercised its right to derecognise the union in favour of USDAW, which represented the majority of staff at Livingston.
