AN ATTEMPT to create the world’s longest comic strip got under way in Dundee yesterday with the help of school children.
Pupils from Claypotts Castle Primary have spent the past weeks creating a section for the strip and were at The Steeple Church in Dundee to add the finishing touches to their artwork.
The aim of the project is to create a 250 metre long Dundee-themed strip that will eclipse the world’s longest comic strip of 244.9 metres.
The record attempt, which has been organised as part of the Six Cities Design Festival which has seen a giant inflatable monkey installed in City Square, will take place over the weekend with the completed strip due to go on display at the Overgate shopping centre tomorrow evening.
Around 50 people, including well-known comic artist Gordon Bell of Dundee publishers DC Thomson & Co Ltd, have been roped in to help with the attempt.
But the public are also being encouraged to get involved and drawing tables will be available at The Steeple for passers-by to add their contribution.
DCA education co-ordinator Richie Cumming said, “As comics are an integral part of Dundee’s history I thought it would be fitting to start the festival with something along these lines on such a grand scale.
“It gets people thinking about their town and their experiences of their city and allows people to express themselves creatively.”
Work will take place on the comic strip at The Steeple between 11am and 4pm until Sunday.
