Second Gig for Gambia set for success

PUPILS AT Queen Anne High School are making music again to help their fellow pupils in The Gambia.

A group of pupils, with help and encouragement from languages teacher Fiona Cowieson, are putting on a second Gig for Gambia tonight to raise funds for the John Pickering Comprehensive Senior Secondary School.

Mrs Cowieson said, “We’re helping improve and expand the John Pickering school as well as building up social links that give pupils from both schools a better understanding of each others’ culture and way of life.

“The young people organising these gigs are incredibly enthusiastic not only about their fund-raising but also about their commitment to helping others.”

The first Gig for Gambia was held in November 2006 and raised more than £1000.

Organisers are hoping that tonight’s gig will be just as successful.

Headlining bands include Taylor Kane, Fultons Point, Dirty Summer, The Manicdotes, The Anaemics and Commando.

All bands have members who are either current or past pupils of Queen Anne High School.

Several of the pupils involved in organising Gig for Gambia will be visiting The Gambia in July 2008 to see first-hand how their fund-raising is helping the African school.

Rector James Bellshaw gave his backing to the pupils’ fund-raising idea.

He declared, “Our connection with the John Pickering Comprehensive School helps our youngsters appreciate how fortunate they are to attend Queen Anne High School.”
