Star Gala Week begins

DESPITE THE dreich weather, villagers marked the beginning of Star Gala Week on Saturday, with all ages getting in on the fun.

After a slight delay due to heavy rain, this year’s gala day went ahead as planned, with locals and visitors enjoying a carnival theme to festivities throughout the afternoon.

The gala was officially opened by Harry Wilkie, the resident who has lived in Star the longest, before spectators were able to enjoy the colourful fancy dress parade. The usual variety of stalls and activities were organised at the park and village hall, with youngsters particularly keen on the magician.

The gala marked the start of an exciting gala week programme, with carpet bowls in the hall and a pub quiz at the Plough rounding off yesterday’s events.

Children’s sports activities will be held in the hall from 6-9pm today, along with a badminton tournament for older ages, before dominoes and bingo and a beetle drive tomorrow. Wednesday sees a fun run for adults and children at Star Hearts’ football ground at 6pm, while the youth club’s pet show will be held from 7-9pm on Thursday.

The week of events culminates on Friday with the traditional gala week disco and dance from 7-11pm.

Margaret Thomson, secretary of the Star Village Committee, said, “We hope that residents will continue to support the full programme of events being held in the village this year during gala week.”
