Victim of Dundee blaze dies in hospital

A pensioner who suffered serious injuries when a fire broke out in his tower block flat in Dundee on Friday night has died.

Last night police named the 70-year-old as George Thomson and confirmed that he had passed away in Ninewells Hospital over the weekend.

Firefighters were called to his first-floor flat at Gowrie Court, near Charleston Drive, at 11.30pm on Friday.

The fire broke out in Mr Thomson’s living room and quickly intensified, causing large amounts of smoke to fill the flat.

Mr Thomson suffered serious burns and smoke- related injuries. He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being escorted to hospital.

No one else was injured.

Last night shocked neighbours described Mr Thomson as a pleasant, quiet man who, by and large, kept himself to himself.

One man, who lived on the floors above Mr Thomson, said he would regularly see him popping out for messages and errands.

He said, “It’s come as a real shock to all the residents.

“I think he had lived here for a few years, before me anyway.

“I would often pass him in the corridor and he would always stop and say hello. He seemed like a nice old guy.”

It is understood Mr Thomson has a granddaughter who lives in the neighbouring Glamis Court.

However attempts to contact her last night were unsuccessful.

Police joined the fire service in conducting an investigation after the fire was put out.

However, a spokesman for the police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

A report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
