People who helped raise funds and children treated at SCBU watch John Donnelly present Alison Wright with the cheque.
A HEALTHY child is undoubtedly the best father’s day gift any dad could wish for.
And Dundee parents Colin Younger and wife Ashley are just one family who have the special care baby unit at Ninewells Hospital to thank for the health of their family.
Daughter Neve was born 12 weeks premature, weighing a tiny 2lb 7ozs, and spent nine weeks in the unit being cared for by staff.
As a way to thank all at the hospital for their care, granddad Jim Docherty organised a sponsored golf day at Alyth Golf Club in Perthshire, where he is managing club secretary.
And such is the depth of feeling both locally and further afield for the vital work of the unit that £10,000 was raised.
“It’s simply not something you ever think of until it happens,” dad Colin said of Neve’s premature birth.
“I was amazed by the work that they do at the unit. The staff were first class and were always there to offer help or advice. Nothing was a problem for them.
“Any money that is spent on the unit is thoroughly deserved.”
Colin added, “To look at Neve now you’d never think she’d been through all that. She’s healthy and a lively wee thing too.”
The family was present yesterday as Alison Wright, senior nurse of neonatal services at the SCBU, accepted the cheque from club captain John Donnelly.
Mr Donnelly said, “I am delighted by the response from my fellow members and the staff of Alyth Golf Club, the local business community, friends and family.
“I would also like to thank the golf clubs that donated tee-times for the prize draw and auction.”
The money will be used to provide special cots with heated mattresses that can benefit small babies.
