MORMON VOLUNTEERS in Dundee have come to the aid of a community garden in need of a makeover.
Members of local congregations of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from both Liff Road and Bingham Terrace churches, will help transform a large area of public land at Cheviot Crescent into an attractive community garden.
Plans to create the garden have been in place for some time with funding provided by the Countryside Ranger Service; Urban Rangers; Community Regeneration Fund and Abertay Housing Association.
However, Urban Ranger Roz Mills was unsure how the project was going to get off the ground until the Mormon Churchoffered their services.
The offer of volunteers came as part of Mormon Helping Hands Day— a national event in which around 20,000 church members will be involved in hundreds of projects across the country.
The volunteers—mostly families working together—enjoy making a difference in their own communities and offer to help as part of their commitment to following a Christian way of life.
Roz worked with some of the volunteers earlier this year when they planted a hedge along the north side of the Cheviot Crescent site.
She was impressed with their enthusiasm and work rate and is looking forward to working with them again.
Dundee company Discovery Compost has also pitched in, having donated four tonnes of compost to the project.
Around 150 Mormon volunteers will be involved in community projects in Dundee at the weekend, including a clean-up at Middleton Community Woodland and in helping to create a mosaic, destined for a local primary school, under the direction of city artist Dougie Paterson.
Local residents are invited to come along and join both events between 10am and 2pm on Saturday.
