Destroyer in city to mark Veterans’ Day

A ROYAL Navy warship which served in the Falklands war docked in Dundee yesterday ahead of Veterans’ Day celebrations this weekend.

The type 42 destroyer Exeter came in to King George V Warf and will remain in the city until Monday.

Yesterday the 4900-tonne ship entertained veterans, dignitaries and invited guests.

Tonight, 100 of the 230-strong crew will attend a reception on the Unicorn as guests of the City of Dundee Combined Ex-Service Association.

Sea cadets will assemble by the Unicorn around 6.20pm before marching to the dock.

Once at the Apex Hotel, the Fintry and Tayside Police pipe bands will beat the retreat. It will be followed by a reception for the Exeter crew on the Unicorn.

Members of Exeter’s company will also march with veterans at the parade in Dundee tomorrow at which the service will focus on the 25th anniversary of the end of the Falklands war.

The ship’s commanding officer, Commander Gavin Young, said, “Although the purpose of our visit is to remember those who have served our country during past conflicts, I hope that by opening the Exeter up to visitors it will let people see the capabilities of an operational warship and meet the servicemen and women who man her.

“We very much look forward to showing people around the ship and giving them an insight into our lives at sea and the roles of the modern Royal Navy.”

The Exeter is in Dundee as part of commemoration tour which also saw it stopping in Edinburgh earlier this month.

The ship will open to the public between 1-5pm on Sunday. Admission is free.
