A LATE Perth man’s postcard collection, which took a lifetime to amass, was sold for more than £10,000 at auction yesterday.
There was massive interest in the 40,000-piece collection, put together by a resident of the Craigie area.
It went under the hammer during a sale at Lindsay Burns Auction House on King Street.
The man’s particular interest was street scenes and landscapes, and the cards capture nostalgic views from up and down the country and abroad.
Mounted in folders, the cards included pictures of Perth and Dundee from the early 1900s.
Also of interest to collectors were rarer cards displaying golfing scenes and pictures of the island of St Kilda.
Nick Burns of Lindsay Burns and Company said it was one of the most interesting and successful sales he had conducted.
“We are delighted to report it was a white glove sale, meaning every lot was sold,” he told The Courier.
“That is a rare thing indeed as usually around 80% of items are sold.
“I have been doing sales for around 10 years and this is the first white glove sale I have ever been involved in, which is very nice.
“In the lead-up to the sale I had said we would very happy to sell for about £10,000 so we were delighted to auction all the postcards for around £10,500.”
Mr Burns said several lots captured the interest of buyers, not just in the auction room but by telephone from throughout the UK.
“There were plenty of bids both on the phone and in the room and among the more notable items were two St Kilda postcards which sold for £170,” he said.
“To value a single postcard at £85 is obviously unusual and a great result.
“It really illustrates their immense rarity.
“There was also keen bidding on a set of golfing cards which went for £130 to a buyer from the south of Scotland.
“All in, it was a very satisfying day.”
