New school speed limits introduced

POTENTIALLY LIFESAVING part-time speed limits have been set up around four Perth schools.

The 20mph limits in Viewlands Road West, Viewlands Road and Oakbank Road in Perth operate during school hours, protecting the pupils of Oakbank Primary, Perth Academy, Viewlands Primary and Perth High School.

Statistics have shown children hit by cars travelling below 30mph are much less likely to be killed, prompting the popular “20’s Plenty” campaign.

The reduced speeds, on what can be particularly busy and congested roads during “school run” times, have been enthusiastically greeted by local councillor, Willie Wilson.

He said, “I very much welcome the introduction of these speeds limits which add to traffic and road safety in the area.

“It has taken some time for all aspects of the project to come on stream but all of the lights and signs are now operational. The function of the speed limits will be carefully monitored by our roads department and by Tayside Police.

“I would ask that all local residents take extra care to ensure that they comply fully with the 20mph speed limits when the schools are occupied.

“The primary reason for providing these speed limits is to increase road safety at and near our local schools.”
