Mural tribute to princess

A PERTH woman has painted a giant mural in memory of the late Princess Diana.

Mary-Jean Sutherland (64), of Bridgend, has been a lifelong fan of the late princess and decided to put her skills to good use to complete the 71in by 51in painting.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death on August 31 and Mrs Sutherland felt her mural is a fitting tribute.

“I’ve always been a big fan of Princess Diana and I just wanted to show that it’s not just English people who remember her,” she said.

“I have a box of books on her, including two written by her mother Frances Spencer, which have details on Diana’s rose. I could never part with these.”

Mrs Sutherland worked as housekeeper for a resident in Perth and it was during this time she fostered her hobby of painting.

“I used to spend a lot of my working time cleaning in the sink and looking out at the garden,” she added. “And it was then that I started to think how lovely it would be to paint the likes of pansies.

“So I began to paint wild flowers whilst I worked part-time in 1989. I haven’t done so many lately but would like to bring out a book of my paintings if I had enough finance.

“I’ve loved everything to do with Princess Diana and as it is also coming up to what would have been her birthday on Sunday, I thought I would paint this mural in memory of her.”

Princes William and Harry have arranged the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium, which will take place tomorrow. It will feature Sir Elton John, Duran Duran and Bryan Ferry among others.

Proceeds will go to charities Princess Diana supported. A memorial service will be held on August 31.
