GOLFERS FROM all over the world will converge this weekend on Fairmont St Andrews for the culmination of one of the biggest golf events of its kind—the International Pairs golf tournament.
The teams will be bidding for the title of 2007 International Pairs world champions and aiming to follow in the footsteps of defending champions the Philippines.
The amateur event, sponsored by VisitScotland, gets under way with the first practice rounds on the Devlin and Torrance courses tomorrow.
An evening event will see a parade of participants led by a pipe band through St Andrews to Lower College Hall for the opening ceremony and civic reception.
Competing for the “Honey Cup,” named after founder Ross Honey, 72% of all golfing nations will be represented by their national champions, creating an excellent opportunity to show exactly what Fife has to offer, not only in terms of golf but also as a holiday destination.
VisitScotland Fife area director Alan Graham said that the event is an accolade for St Andrews and provides a real opportunity to highlight Fife tourism to 200 golfers from across the world.
“It is important for us to realise the potential this creates for the golf market, not only in St Andrews but also the rest of Fife where we undoubtedly have a number of gems dotted around the coast and further inland.
“Hopefully we can encourage the competitors and supporters to come back and perhaps enjoy a more leisurely visit without the pressure of playing at two of St Andrews’ finest courses.”
Mr Honey, also managing director for International Pairs, said that St Andrews will provide a tremendous backdrop to three fantastic days of golf and entertainment.
“Fairmont St Andrews has been the spiritual home of the International Pairs since we first held the UK final there in 2003, and it’s a fitting venue for this year’s world final.”
“The scene is set for a truly unforgettable final,” he added.
The event concludes with the closing ceremony and gala dinner on Tuesday evening.
