Lannen case police tell of useful calls

THE OFFICER leading the police investigation into a Dundee murder that took place 28 years ago is encouraged by the public response to the latest appeal for information.

Tayside Police issued a request on Friday for a man who was friendly with Carol Lannen in the years running up to her brutal killing to come forward.

While the man—known only as Roger—has not made himself known to police, Detective Chief Inspector Ewen West, of Dundee CID, said yesterday that a number of calls received over the weekend were being followed up by the inquiry team.

“We have received a number of very useful calls, all of which will be fully researched and followed up. I extend my thanks to those who have called us and would ask anyone else who may have information to call us,” said Mr West.

“There may be someone out there who feels the information they have is of no use to the police. Please, let us be the judges of that and get in touch.”

The body of 18-year-old Carol was found in Templeton Woods on the outskirts of Dundee on Wednesday, March 22, 1979.

She left her home in Dundee’s Hill Street on the night of March 20 and was known to have been in the Castle Street and Exchange Street areas of Dundee city centre, an area she frequented on a regular basis. When Carol was last seen she was wearing a white polo neck jumper, a brown mid-length striped skirt with matching tie belt, a black velvet jacket, and black lacing shoes with metal toecaps.

On Sunday, April 1, 1979, some of Carol’s clothing was found on the banks of the River Don near the A96 between Hatton of Fintry and Kintore, Aberdeenshire.

Tayside Police have never closed the Carol Lannen murder inquiry file. Despite the passage of time, officers continue to receive information relating to the case.

Detectives have received information that around the mid 1970s Carol was known to be friendly with a man, thought to be called Roger, who lived in a flat somewhere between numbers 56 and 60 in Dundee’s Main Street, near to the junction with Dens Road.

He may have been a bus or coach driver, although this has not been confirmed. Roger would have been aged between 25 and 30 at the time, so would be aged in his late 50s or early 60s now.

He was described as being of stocky build with light brown hair swept back off his face and he had long prominent side- burns. He spoke with a Dundee accent.

While the man is not being treated as a suspect, officers believe that he may be able to provide information regarding other associates or friends of Carol Lannen and other locations that she visited.

It is known that Carol was friendly with this man, visited him at his home, and there is information to suggest that she sometimes ran errands for him.

Anyone who thinks they can identify the man, or thinks that they might be the person detectives are looking for, should get in touch with Tayside Police on Dundee 223200 or speak to any police officer.

Information can also be passed on anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
