Carnoustie Open traffic measures

Tayside Police yesterday said they are ready to welcome the thousands of visitors who will descend on the area to enjoy next week’s Open Golf Championship at Carnoustie.

The force is one of a number of agencies who “wish to extend a warm welcome” to visitors and who want to encourage them to enjoy the tournament safely.

Chief Superintendent Bill Harkins, divisional commander in charge of Angus, said, “People from all over the world will be coming to Carnoustie to enjoy either a week or weekend at the finest golf tournament in the world.

“I’m sure they will also enjoy visiting the surrounding Angus area throughout the week and taking in the local hostelries and amenities after the golf has finished for the day.

“We intend to ensure that visitors enjoy the vibrant atmosphere that Carnoustie and Angus has to offer, but we also feel it is essential that people understand that certain standards are adhered to.

“Tayside Police has an excellent record in reducing crime and discouraging anti-social behaviour and the police will take every possible step to ensure that visitors and local residents can enjoy the tournament without disturbance.

“Officers will be on hand throughout Carnoustie during the golf tournament to provide help, advice and reassurance.

“Our firm, fair and friendly style of policing should ensure that visitors to Carnoustie enjoy their time in the town.”

The police claim a great deal of effort has gone into making Carnoustie residents aware of road closures and traffic plans.

A liaison officer has attended community meetings and visited businesses in the town to answer any queries people may have.

A police spokesperson said, “If you are a resident of Carnoustie, or if you have a business in the town, please take the time to study the traffic management plan as several local roads will be closed or subject to one- way systems during the Open golf championship.”

“The A92 will remain open to commuter traffic during the Open, however, be aware of speed restrictions, an increase in traffic and allow plenty of time for your journey.”

From 7am-2pm, access to the A92 is via Westhaven Road and the A930 south of Muirdrum or by the Upper Victoria link, while from 2pm-9pm, drivers should leave by the A930 Carlogie Road and Balmachie Road or via the Upper Victoria link.

“If your house is located on any of the affected streets identified in the traffic plan then you will not be able to park outside your house, or there may be a restriction on the times you can park,” said the spokesperson.

“You can apply for a free residents’ parking permit from Carnoustie Police Station—however, you will need to take proof of residence with you.”

Police say that any vehicle causing an obstruction or parked illegally will be towed away, with the driver facing prosecution in addition to a £150 charge for the vehicle’s release.

High Street and Park Avenue car parks will operate as normal —however Links Avenue car park will be closed for the duration of the championship.

With first tee-off times as early as 6.30am, spectators will be arriving in Carnoustie from 6am onwards.

Final tee-off times will be around 4.20pm and play could continue until 9pm.

Additional public transport will be provided at peak times, and taxi services will be available in Links Avenue.
