Memorial flight and 40s ball at Leuchars

FIFERS MAY be missing out on the annual RAF Leuchars Airshow this year but they can still see the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight at the airbase.

The flight’s Spitfire and Dakota are to make a Salute to the Few in what is its 50th anniversary year of commemorative display flying at a special charity ball at Leuchars.

Runway resurfacing means there is no 2007 airshow but instead there will be a Battle of Britain charity ball on September 8, hosted by TV presenter Lorraine Kelly.

After watching the memorial flight, guests will step inside a giant aircraft hangar and be transported back to the 1940s thanks to specialist entertainment, lighting and catering.

Dress code will be black tie or 1940s style and big band music will be performed by the Royal Air Force Squadronaires, the RAF Leuchars Pipes and Drums and singer Andrew Merry, accompanied by the Flyright Dance Company.

The one-off event will also include a charity auction and a three- course meal prepared by celebrity chef Nick Nairn’s fine dining service, Nairns Anywhere.

Money raised will go to the RAF Benevolent Fund, the Royal Air Forces Association and CLIC Sergent Scotland.
