T fan on breach of peace charges

A MUSIC fan accused of terrifying revellers at T in the Park by scaling a 60ft speaker gantry during a headline act has appeared at the sheriff court in Perth.

Duncan Binnie (25), of Timberbush, Edinburgh, denies causing a breach of the peace during the festival.

The charge alleges that he climbed the speaker gantry of the main stage on Sunday, as the three-day festival at Balado, near Kinross, was drawing to a close.

The charge states that he caused fear and annoyance to members of the public and thereby committed a breach of the peace.

Binnie, allegedly evaded security staff before scaling the massive metal structure as top band Snow Patrol wowed fans.

He also denies attempting to pervert the course of justice by giving a false name to police officers who interviewed him later.

He will stand trial on September 18 with an intermediate diet on September 6.

It is reported that Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody had to interrupt the band’s headline act to “talk a man down” from the speaker gantry.

In all 66 arrests were made at this year’s T in the Park music festival, down from 70 last year.

Of those, 30 were kept in custody, 16 on drugs-related charges and the remaining 14 for offences including assault, breach of the peace and theft.

Speaking after the festival, Chief Supt Matt Hamilton, the officer in charge of policing the extravaganza, said crime had been at a low level.

“The overall mood of revellers was exemplary,” he said.
