Lorries and ashes claims denied

AN INCENSED grandson is blaming Perth and Kinross Council for lorries that he claims have driven over his grandparents’ ashes at Perth Crematorium.

Arthur Frater (26), Primrose Crescent, Perth, yesterday expressed his disgust at what he said was the “deliberate” placing of contractors’ lorries over the ashes of the deceased.

Mr Frater’s late grandparents, Alexander and Mary Morrison, have their ashes laid to rest at the crematorium but he hit out at the actions of the contractor’s staff, employed by Perth and Kinross Council to enlarge a garden area there.

“My grandparents’ ashes are scattered in this area,” he said. “The council have told me there are no ashes in this piece of ground but this isn’t the case.

“There are flowers left by relatives and the lorry we saw this week was parked directly over my grandparents’ ashes. I find this very upsetting and have been told by the council that I’m always on their back.”

Mr Frater said this wasn’t the first time such an incident had taken place at Perth Crematorium.

“The council removed a plaque for my grandparents in 2002 during environmental improvements and now this happens,” he said. “What makes it worse is we saw a council lorry drive over a public footpath and the employees were all smiling—it’s as if they don’t care. I wonder if the same thing has happened to other people in Perth?”

But a Perth and Kinross spokesman said the work carried out this week is to enlarge the “summer garden,” and no areas containing ashes were touched.

He said, “The memorial area in the summer garden is now near capacity and work has been done to enlarge it, so families will continue to be able to place memorials to their loved ones in this garden.”
