Reception for world champions

World champion debaters (from left) Neil Dewar, Joanna Farmer and Netan Dogra show off their trophy. Callum and Stuart were unavailable.

A RECEPTION for the successful Scottish Schools debating team, which triumphed at the World Schools Debating Championships, was held yesterday at DC Thomson’s office in Meadowside.

Neil Dewar of the High School of Dundee, Netan Dogra of Grove Academy, Joanna Farmer of Robert Gordon’s College and Callum Jones and Stuart Cullen of George Heriot’s School beat the brightest young minds of 34 other nations with their knowledge of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

The team has a connection with The Courier, as it was in our Junior Schools Debating competition that three members began their debating careers.

In 2003, Neil reached the second round, in 2005 Joanna reached the final and Netan won the competition in 2004.

This year has been good for Dundee, with 80% of senior debating trophies available in Scotland being won by either the High School of Dundee or Grove Academy.
