Whales visit Lunan Bay

One of the minke whales photographed by Mr Walker.

Richard Walker likes nothing more than to catch a fish for the pot, but on his latest trip into Lunan Bay he decided to forego the pleasure—as he did not have a big enough pot.

Mr Walker, from Arbroath, whose family have a holiday place at Corbie Knowe on the edge of the bay, abandoned his fishing when two minke whales surfaced close to his boat.

“They were feeding and very fast-moving,” he said.

“Flocks of gulls helped us pinpoint the whales as they moved from one shoal to the next.

“I have been visiting this area all my life and I have seen dolphins over the past 10 years, but never whales.

“I always take my camera with me, and was lucky to be there.

“It was a privilege to be amongst them. This is not a whale-watching spot and they have moved away.

“While I was delighted to have seen them, it was tempered by the fact that I would not want them to be pursued or pestered.

“There are a number of jet skis around, and I was always concerned when dolphins came into the bay.”
