Dundee’s roadworks misery

The build up of traffic on the Marketgait.

COMMUTERS COMING into Dundee can expect weeks of misery as a series of roadworks are completed on the main route into the city.

Several roadworks are taking place in Marketgait, leaving drivers with no way of avoiding traffic jams.

Dock Street is closed westbound from the entrance to City Quay, while eastbound traffic has been reduced to a single lane from Gellatly Street to the junction with east Marketgait.

The westbound closure of Dock Street will last a fortnight, while the eastbound lane is to be closed for six weeks.

Westbound traffic is being diverted through the docks past the Apex Hotel.

Traffic was tailed back as far as the junction with Broughty Ferry Road during yesterday morning’s rush hour.

Queues were not helped by drivers who performed U-turns when they were caught behind the lengthy line of slow moving traffic.

Traffic on Broughty Ferry Road heading towards Blackscroft also started to crawl at Market Street.

Eastbound commuters experienced lengthy tailbacks as they merged into a single lane.

The hold-ups also affected cars exiting the Tay Road Bridge, as traffic had to give way to the long line of slow moving traffic.

There were long tail-backs in both directions by midday.

There were also queues of traffic on east, north and west Marketgait as motorists took the long way round the arterial route to beat the traffic and rejoin the ring road.

Meanwhile, motorists driving down Albert Street and Princes Street were delayed as vehicles tried to join the traffic flow at Blackscroft.

One female motorist said negotiating the city centre was “a nightmare.”

“It’s terrible—I really don’t know what way is best to get to my office on Dock Street,” she said.

“There are queues and roadworks everywhere.”

There was also a heavy build up of traffic on the approach to the Tay Road Bridge at rush hour last night, but police said it was continuing to flow—albeit slowly.
