Long wait for bat-bite teenager

A KIRKCALDY teenager bitten by a bat while on a camping trip with pals will have to wait another month to find out whether he has got rabies.

Dale Gill (15) was bitten when walking in woods at Dysart two weeks ago and has received vaccinations. His mother Frances said, “He feels fine and is not showing any symptoms of anything, but has to get two more injections and it will be another 30 days before we know either way. It’s a worrying time for us.”

Catching rabies from a bat bite is very rare. The virus, different from classical rabies, is carried by some Daubenton’s bats, but few have been found with the live virus in Britain since 1997, none in Scotland. Only three rabies deaths from bats have been confirmed in Europe in 30 years, the most recent being that of Angus artist David McRae in 2002.
