People may have to wait weeks for mail

ROYAL MAIL customers could have to wait weeks to receive outstanding correspondence as the rolling postal strike continues with a fresh wave of action across the country today.

Royal Mail said it is unable to give any indication of how long delays may last and confirmed that the backlog at depots remains unknown.

After an additional series of unofficial strikes in Glasgow and Edinburgh last week, the service has suffered more setbacks in sorting and deliveries.

Earlier this week independent watchdog Postwatch Scotland appealed for customers to consider carefully the impact the strike would have on their communications.

The industrial action has hit different departments throughout the network and caused disruption on a range of services within Royal Mail’s operations.

A spokesman for Royal Mail yesterday moved to reassure customers that all is being done to reduce the impact of the strikes.

She said, “Unfortunately, unofficial industrial action in Glasgow and Edinburgh last week did create a backlog of mail which Royal Mail is working hard to clear.

“Some mail may also be delayed as a result of the ongoing official industrial action, but Royal Mail has contingency plans in place to minimise disruption.

“We apologise to any customers who have experienced disruption and for any inconvenience caused.”

Today workers in mail centres and at airports will strike for 24 hours from 7pm, followed by action by different groups of employees, including delivery staff.
