Sally to join seals in Tay swim

LONG-DISTANCE adventure swimmer Sally Goble will attempt to be the first person to swim the 14 miles from Dundee to St Andrews non-stop.

Sally (41), whose family live in Glenrothes, swam the English Channel last year and aims to take the plunge today or tomorrow, depending on the weather.

“I was looking for another challenge after my English Channel crossing and the thought of attempting a route that nobody else has done before appealed to me,” she said.

“My main challenges will be waters that are significantly colder than the English Channel, the threat of hypothermia and the unpredictability of attempting a swim which has not been done before. We’ll be learning a certain amount about the tides and the route as we go along.”

Under the rules of open water swimming, Sally will be wearing only a swimming costume, cap and goggles, and will not be able to touch her support boat.

Dolphins, seals, jellyfish and any shipping in the Tay estuary will all have to be negotiated in a swim that will take around 10 to 12 hours to complete.
