Consumers urged to back local meat

WITH THE export ban on Scottish meat still in place, consumers were yesterday urged to back their local farming industry.

Richard Lochhead, cabinet secretary for rural affairs and the environment, flew the flag for home- produced meat at Perth butchers Simon Howie.

“It has been a rough week for thousands of Scottish families who work in the meat industry—all the farmers, processors, butchers and retailers,” said Mr Lochhead. “The best thing we all can do to support them this Sunday is to put a Scottish roast on our tables.

“Being Scottish produce, we know it is the best we can buy.”

With restrictions on meat exports, Scotland’s livestock industry is relying more than ever on home sales.

During his visit, Mr Lochhead got behind the counter to serve loyal customers and chatted with Mr Howie and his staff.

Accompanying him was Glen, the face of Scottish beef, and National Farmers Union Scotland president Jim McLaren.

Mr McLaren said that they were encouraging customers to look at what is on their plate.

“With the closure of the export market it is very important that Scottish consumers are buying as much Scottish red meat as they can.”
