Cadets are country’s best

DUNFERMLINE CADETS and staff are celebrating being named top squadron in the UK for the second time.

The 1145 (Dunfermline) Squadron, Air Training Corps, came top out of 974 units to win the Sir Alan Lees Trophy.

Last year the cadets, who are based at HMS Caledonia in Rosyth, were runners-up and they were previously awarded the trophy in 1995.

They got to the final after being judged best squadron in their wing, then best in their region. The last six squadrons were assessed by officers at RAF Cranwell.

Flight Lieutenant Ross Mitchell said, “The 50 cadets in the squadron have much to be proud of, with another year of exceptional achievements in many areas, not least sport, drill and examinations.

“New skills were learned in the pipe and drum band, in writing and issuing a newsletter, in making and flying radio-controlled aircraft and in the craft group.

“Courses, including leadership and first aid, took place on a regular basis while cadets attended several camps at RAF bases both in the UK and abroad.

“Cadets have also successfully completed air cadet pilot and gilding scholarships, gaining their solo wings in the process.

“Cadets within the squadron’s community link programme also helped various charities.”

The Lees Trophy will be presented by Air Commodore G. Moulds, commandant ATC, in October.
