Tributes paid to respected teacher

TRIBUTES WERE last night paid to a Dundee schoolteacher who died after a brief illness.

Judith Leach passed away after spending seven weeks in Ninewells Hospital’s intensive care unit after suffering complications following a hernia operation.

Miss Leach (56) was a well respected principal teacher of guidance at Grove Academy, and shaped many young lives.

Her funeral will take place today at St Paul’s Cathedral in Dundee.

Born in 1951, Miss Leach was educated at Downfield Primary and Morgan Academy before gaining her MA at Aberdeen University and entering the teaching profession.

She had been in post at Grove Academy for 18 years, having previously taught at Lawside Academy and Menzieshill High School.

A statement issued on behalf of the school said, “As well as being an English and guidance teacher who had the well deserved regard and affection of her pupils, Miss Leach was a very supportive and valued colleague and friend to staff.

“Her passing is a huge loss to her mother, her friends and the pupils, parents and staff of the Grove school community.”

Miss Leach was a talented pianist, organist and clarinet player.

A member of St Paul’s Cathedral Episcopalian choir, Miss Leach also used to sing in the Dundee Choral Union.

In addition to her musical interests, Miss Leach was a keen embroiderer, reader, gardener and worker with the Cats’ Protection League.
