Drivers aim for home track racing success

SCOTLAND’S BIGGEST motor racing meeting will take place at Knockhill next weekend, and two young Scottish drivers are looking to win and be crowned kings of the hill.

The closely fought Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship arrives in town, supported by a programme featuring other top championships.

Looking forward to dicing with the opposition on their home track are Gordon Shedden (28) from Dalgety Bay, and Jonathan Adam (22) from Kirkcaldy—who are both employed at the Fife track.

When he’s not behind the wheel of his car, Gordon is the circuit’s business development manager, while Jonathan is a senior racing instructor.

It is Gordon’s second competitive season, yet he occupies third place in the championship behind Jason Plato and Fabrizio Giovanardi.

He admitted he was in a far better position than he ever dreamed he would be at the start of the season.

The reason for the pre-season pessimism was that Gordon and his team mate—reigning champion Matt Neal—switched to Honda Civics for 2007.

It normally takes at least a year to make any new car competitive.

“Unfortunately, Matt’s car was written off in a huge accident at Brands Hatch and the team are working 24-seven to build a new car for this, the penultimate round of the championship, and I just hope we make it, as two cars are better than one in the heat of battle,” said Gordon.

Jonathan is already miles ahead of the opposition in the SEAT Cupra championship.

He leads Italian team-mate Fulvio Mussi by 75 points, and is looking to clinch the championship and the £100,000 winner’s cheque at Knockhill.

Jonathan said he relished the chance to race on the track he knows so well.

“I can’t wait to get to Knockhill, and if all goes to plan, my team—Total Control Racing—and all my friends and family should be popping the champagne corks.

“However, I should have tied things up at Brands Hatch, but a nudge from a fellow competitor saw me finish up in the gravel and out of the race, so I’ve learned never to count my chickens.”

Jonathan said he would like to follow in Gordon’s tyre tracks and compete in the Touring Cars section next season.
