Man hurt in knife attack at ATM

Police tape off the scene.

THE POLICE launched a major investigation yesterday after a man was injured in a horrific slashing attack at a Dundee cash machine.

The incident occurred in broad daylight around 8.30am at the ATM outside the Spar shop, near the junction with Kinghorne Road.

The victim was using the bank machine when he was approached from behind and attacked with a blade.

It is not known if the assailant made off with any money.

After receiving treatment at the scene from stunned shop workers, the victim was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital.

He is believed to have sustained two deep cuts to his face, but his injuries are not said to be life-threatening.

Large pools of his blood were still visible on the pavement outside the store as police began their investigation into the vicious attack.

Several police cars and vans descended on the area, with several uniformed and plain-clothes officers involved in the initial investigation.

Bloody white paper towels that had been used to stem the flow from the victim’s wounds were also clearly visible behind the police cordon.

One Spar worker, who asked not to be named, tried to help the victim in the immediate aftermath of the attack.

He said, “The guy was slashed as he was at the bank machine.

“Somebody ran into the shop and asked us to call for an ambulance. I went out and tried to stem the bleeding.”

The sudden nature of the attack meant many people in the Hilltown were oblivious to the incident until police began door-to-door inquiries this morning.

Another worker from a nearby shop said, “I didn’t know anything was happening until all the police started arriving.”

Police said the area would have been busy at the time and are keen for anyone with information to call 01382 223200.
