Perth tops affordable affluence table

PERTH HAS come out top of a table for affluence and affordability, with its schools and historical background attracting people to the city.

The survey, conducted by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), looked at the affordable affluence index, which identifies the Scottish towns and cities where the elements of an affluent lifestyle are on offer at the most affordable prices.

Average house prices were found to be just over the national average at £158,000.

A spokesman last night said Perth is the “hotspot” to live for people who don’t want to break the bank.

“The affordable affluence index was compiled using a unique model of data analysis and aggregation, evaluating locations in terms of lifestyle indicators—factors identified by RBS private banking as important to its affluent customers,” he said.

“Situated on the banks of the River Tay, Perth boasts a rich monarchic history featuring sites such as Scone Palace and Moot Hill where sovereigns were once crowned. Perth’s picturesque natural scenery provides outdoor activities including skiing, cycling and stunning country walks.

“Perth also boasts an abundance of leisure activities with a diverse range of golf and tennis clubs, museums, galleries and premium boutiques which are well-suited to the affluent city-dweller. Perth Grammar School has established a reputation of academic excellence, featuring well within the country’s top 20% of good schools.

“In addition, with average property prices of approximately £158,000 and wages pivoting around £34,000, it is not surprising that Perth holds pole position in Scotland’s affordable affluence survey.”

Lifestyle indicators included Scottish award-winning restaurants, cafes, bars, motor dealerships, luxury hotel chains as well as high-performing schools, entertainment and cultural attractions.

In total, 10 towns make up the affordable affluence index, with some of the less anticipated entries including Livingston, Kilmarnock and Falkirk.
