Police not ruling out more raids

POLICE MAY launch more high-profile raids as they continue inquiries into an alleged firearms incident in Dundee this week.

Four people were arrested on Thursday when 15 armed officers in full riot gear swooped on two houses in a quiet street in the Linlathen area.

All four were later released without charge but the force has not ruled out launching further raids as it seeks people thought to have been involved in an incident in Mid Craigie on Tuesday in which gunshots were heard.

A police spokeswoman last night said detectives were continuing to carry out inquiries.

The events of the past week have left many residents concerned about a perceived upturn in criminality on the city’s Linlathen and Mid Craigie housing estates.

The police have been carrying out increased patrols in both estates since Tuesday’s incident and there was a strong presence in the area when The Courier visited last night.

However, the measures have not been enough to calm the nerves of all residents.

One woman—who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals—said people were frightened to leave their homes after dark.

She said, “This used to be a really quiet area but it’s different now.

“You get the feeling the police know what’s going on but up to now they’ve done nothing about it.

“Druggies come and go and there’s sometimes shady people going in and out of houses at night.

“We’ve all heard stories of things happening around here.

“People are openly going about with things like swords, big ornamental ones, in the street and you know kids have knives and stuff on them.

“We don’t go out of our houses at night unless it is in the car—it’s just too scary.

She continued, “Most of the people are decent, law-abiding people who work or have kids and take them to school and live normal lives. But it’s horrible when you see things going on around you and there’s nothing you can do about it.”
