A 21-YEAR-OLD Dundee University architecture student fears losing his sight in one eye following an unprovoked attack in a city nightclub.
The student, who lives in the Downfield area and fears further trouble if identified, was rushed to Ninewells Hospital early on Thursday following the vicious attack in Fat Sams.
Police have retrieved CCTV footage from the club which recorded the incident that could ruin the student’s chosen career.
He was rushed to hospital as blood poured from horrendous injuries and underwent an emergency operation during the night after a specialist eye surgeon was called from her bed.
Still in shock, and concerned for his future, the student spoke of his ordeal from his bed in the specialist eye ward yesterday.
He will have to undergo further surgery next week if he is to have any chance of saving the sight in his right eye.
He feared for his chosen career and said his return to university for the start of term next week would at best be delayed as doctors try to do all they can to save his sight.
He said he went out with a group of friends on Wednesday to celebrate the return of one of those friends from America.
He was inside the nightclub when the attack took place.
“A guy threw a glass straight in my face. It was deliberate.”
He said there was no reason at all for the attack.
“As soon as it happened I just hurled myself onto the floor and waited on the bouncers. They picked me up and literally dragged me to the first aid room. My head was down and blood was just gushing out everywhere.
“Paramedics and police came in and I was taken straight up to accident and emergency.”
His eyelid has been stitched closed over his eyeball and injuries to his cornea have also been stitched. He said further surgery would be necessary on Monday.
“There’s a good chance my sight has gone. At best I’m never going to have great sight again.”
Police said the student was deliberately attacked by another male as he attempted to make his way to the toilet at Fat Sams around 1.20am on Thursday.
Police are scrutinising CCTV images of the assault captured within the nightclub.
Sergeant Jim McInally said the injury suffered by the student was horrendous. He appealed to anyone who witnessed the attack to come forward to police.
He said it was difficult to quantify the long-term consequences for the architectural studies student and the injury could ruin his career if unable to see properly to create line drawings or his sense of depth perception was affected.
“The victim was just going to the toilet when this person turned around and assaulted him. There was nothing leading up to it.
“They (Fat Sams) have made their CCTV available to us and we have actually got some footage of the assault. We are sending it over for enhancement and we are also looking at external CCTV from outwith the club.”
Police issued a description of the man sough in connection with the attack.
He is described as 18-20 with collar-length brown hair and blond highlights. He was wearing a white T-shirt.
Police are keen to speak to anyone who may know the attacker’s identity or witnessed the assault taking place.
Call police on Dundee 223200 or Crimestoppers confidentially on 0800 555111 with information.
