Fore! Bombs at Carnoustie

The blast from the controlled explosion of the shells.

BOMB DISPOSAL experts from Faslane were called to Carnoustie yesterday afternoon after four shells were uncovered on the sands near the mouth of the Barry Burn.

The shells, most likely practice bombs dating back to the second world war, were revealed by the extra high autumn tides.

Police put a cordon round the area at 3pm and the Royal Logistics Corps bomb disposal team arrived around an hour later under police escort.

The team assessed the rounds and decided to construct a sandbag shelter to detonate them safely.

However they were worried that the tide would come in before they were able to complete the job and decided to ask local teenagers Sean Gibb, Scott Jamieson and Ewan Smith, who were watching the proceedings, if they could help fill sandbags.

Thanks to their efforts the shelter was completed in time for the controlled explosion to be carried out successfully.
