Innovation to spot the rot in teeth

A DUNDEE dental firm has launched a new product allowing earlier and more accurate detection of tooth decay, and it has already received its first order.

IDMoS, a Dundee University spin-out company at Dundee Technology Park, unveiled CarieScan at the annual British Dental Trade Association meeting in Birmingham yesterday.

It detects caries—progressive tooth decay—and was developed by experts Professor Nigel Pitts and Dr Chris Longbottom.

It aims to exploit a global shift towards preventive management of decay.

Denplan Limited is to promote CarieScan products to their network of 6500 dental practices, representing more than 70% of the UK dental plan market.

Dr Roger Matthews, chief dental officer with Denplan, said, “We are extremely impressed with the instruments and the research findings to date and welcome the chance to promote it to our members as a truly innovative aid to early diagnosis and an integral part of preventive practice.”
