Probe after young mother dies in fire

FIRE INVESTIGATORS are still trying to determine the cause of an early morning fire at a Dundee flat yesterday that left a young mother dead.

Forensic experts from the region’s fire and rescue and police services spent several hours at the first floor flat at Carolina Court yesterday in a bid to identify how the blaze started.

The 37-year-old victim has not been formally identified but is understood to be a married mother-of-one from the city.

She was the only person in the flat when the fire broke out at the Hillcrest Housing Association property at 6.45am.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus forced entry to the heavily smoke-filled flat and removed the casualty—who is understood to have been sitting in a chair.

Paramedics gave her immediate attention but she was pronounced dead a short time later.

The fire itself was relatively small in scale but produced a large quantity of smoke.

Neighbouring properties in the modern housing development off Broughty Ferry Road were evacuated and ventilated by fire crews.

Fire investigators spent much of yesterday carrying out a detailed forensic examination of the property in a bid to identify the cause of the blaze.

A spokesperson for Tayside Fire and Rescue said last night, “There is still quite a bit of investigating to do as what we have found is inconclusive so far.”

Tayside Police also confirmed last night that investigations into the fire were continuing in conjunction with the fire and rescue service.

Hillcrest Housing were contacted by The Courier for comment on the fire, but had not done so at time of going to press.
