Vintage ornithological year

Club chairman Bob McCurlie (left) hands the booklet to Angus Council countryside services manager Mick Pawley at yesterday’s launch.

A NEW report reveals Angus and Dundee had a vintage ornithological year in 2005.

Unveiled yesterday on the shores of Forfar Loch country park, the Angus and Dundee Bird Report shows one of the highest annual number of species recorded—231—and some outstanding sightings of rare varieties.

The report reviews the ornithological year, giving population trends, breeding colony counts, a Tay Ringing Group report and sightings of rare birds.

Additions to the Angus list include the seldom-seen isabelline shrike and rustic bunting.

In addition, little terns bred in Angus for the third year running after an absence of nine years.

Reports can be had from John Ogilvie, 23 Church Street, Brechin, or Montrose Basin Wildlife Centre.
