A SMOKE alarm alerted the occupants of a St Andrews flat to a blaze in their bedroom last night.

Fife Fire and Rescue Service raced to the block of four flats in Woodburn Terrace at 11pm, amid reports that people may have been trapped in the ground floor room.

Crews quickly ascertained that that was not the case however, and everyone was accounted for at the scene.

Police said there were no casualties as a result of the incident.

The blaze was extinguished fairly quickly but fire personnel remained there for some time cutting away affected timber.
