Rail users’ anger at wildcat strikes

WILDCAT STRIKE action by some ScotRail staff played havoc with rail services through Dundee yesterday.

Frustrated city rail users were forced to find alternative means of transportation after train cancellations caused disruption to travel plans.

Scotrail said two separate morning services were cancelled as a result of the strike, although travellers spoke of further problems into the afternoon.

Initially ScotRail downplayed the incident, claiming the cancellation was due to staff shortages.

However, a spokeswoman later confirmed the 8.45am service from Dundee to Aberdeen was cancelled as a result of unofficial action.

She also said ScotRail were forced to cancel the 11.40am Glasgow Queen Street to Aberdeen service, as a knock on effect rather than further strike action.

“It’s not clear how widespread the problem is,” she said. “It’s to do with Aslef and union members.”

Customers at Dundee’s train station were left feeling angry over the cancellations and disappointed at the lack of warning by ScotRail staff.

ScotRail said they hoped to be able to provide all scheduled services, without interruption, in the coming days.

A spokesperson for train drivers’ union Aslef said last night it was not aware of any co-ordinated action by members yesterday.

However, the union is in the midst of balloting its members in ScotRail over discipline procedures it considers “utterly disproportionate.”

Train users have already been warned services could be paralysed from November 21 if, as expected, the majority of drivers back strikes.
