Forklift driven into cemetery

THREE YOUTHS drove a forklift truck into a Dundee cemetery last night— damaging gravestones and causing extensive damage to machines at a nearby plant hire yard.

Police apprehended the youths—aged 12, 13 and 14—following an alarm at A-Plant on Mid-Craigie Road at around 7.30pm.

When police arrived they found the forklift had ploughed through the wall separating the plant from Eastern Cemetery and damaged some gravestones.

The youths are also thought to have damaged several machines at the plant hire.

Plant managers were called to secure the premises and were assessing the full scale of the damage last night.

Depot Manager Eddie Gilmour said, “We won’t know the full extent of the damage until morning but it looks like quite a few of our machines have been damaged and a forklift truck has been severely damaged.

“We are not sure as yet how the youths gained entry but we believe the climbed the fence into the yard from the cemetery.”

Police confirmed that the youths were being detained last night, but no charges had been brought at the time of going to press.
