THE WORLD-FAMOUS architect responsible for designing the Maggie’s Centre in Dundee has been hit with a $15 million lawsuit.
It has also been claimed the award-winning architect ignored warnings about flaws in one of his designs.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology paid Frank Gehry’s Los Angeles firm $300 million to design its Stata Center.
Celebrated for its unconventional walls and radical angles, the 400,000 square-foot centre contains laboratories, offices and classrooms.
It also features a street winding its way through the ground floor but MIT now claim the building has serious design flaws, which have led to drainage problems and persistent leaks, among other problems.
The college allege shortly after construction work was completed in 2004, the centre’s outdoor amphitheatre cracked due to drainage problems.
Its lawsuit also claims snow and ice fell from window boxes and other parts of the road which blocked emergency exits and damaged parts of the building.
They also claim the building has suffered leaks and mould has grown over its brick exterior.
The action also names construction company Skanska. It states, “Gehry breached its duties by providing deficient designs services and drawings.”
Skanksa deny any wrongdoing and claim Gehry ignored their warnings that the design was flawed.
