Military snipers to be issued with new rifle

LONG-RANGE weapon specialists at 45 Commando Group in Arbroath are among armed forces’ snipers being issued with a rifle that is more accurate at greater distances.

Scottish military units are being equipped with the new weapon in a £4 million contract announced by the Ministry of Defence yesterday.

British firm Accuracy International will supply 580 sniper rifles across the armed services.

The new rifle is being supplied as part of a larger sniper system improvement programme to give British snipers greater power, precision and stealth.

The new rifles fire a larger calibre bullet than the sniper weapon currently in use.

Advanced sights mean snipers can operate around the clock in difficult conditions, while laser technology will allow distant targets to be accurately located.

Minister for defence equipment and support Baroness Taylor said, “We are committed to providing our troops on the front line with the equipment they need.

“Military snipers provide vital capability on operations, defeating the enemy and protecting our troops on the ground.”

She added, “The first contract is for the new longer range rifle and day sight, and we expect to start taking deliveries of this kit early next year.”

Training units will familiarise themselves with the weapon and how it works with other parts of the sniper system.

The new rifle is due to be ready for operational use next spring.
