THE SCOTTISH army officer killed in Afghanistan this week lived in Fife, it has been confirmed. Captain John McDermid died in an explosion while leading a patrol in the town of Sangin on Wednesday.
The father of three served with the Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
He and some colleagues were helping to train the Afghan army and were out on patrol when they were ambushed.
Captain McDermid and his wife Gill, a police officer with Fife Constabulary, lived in Rosyth.
She joined the force in 2001 and is presently a detective constable with the family protection unit.
Chief Constable Peter Wilson said, “The thoughts of all of us are with Gillian and her family following this tragic loss. We are continuing to provide every support we can at this very difficult time.”
Mrs McDermid and her family have asked to be left to grieve in peace.
